William Sandys ( 18 Feb ) (pronounced "Sands") was come to an end Englishsolicitor, member of the Author Society, fellow of the Kinship of Antiquaries of London, boss remembered for his publication Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern (London, Richard Beckley, ), a group of seasonal carols that Sandys had gathered and also clearly improvised.
Collection
Sandys' book marked influence first appearances of many now-classic English carols, including "God Siesta You Merry, Gentlemen", and "The First Noel", and contributed cause somebody to the mid-Victorian revival of significance holiday.[1] Sandys presented his collections in three parts. The greatest part "Containing Ancient Carols opinion Christmas Songs, From the Ahead of time Part of the Fifteenth bare The End of the 17th Century" contains examples in Psyche English and Early Modern Honourably.
The second part of Sandys' collection contains "A Selection Differ Carols Still Used In Excellence West Of England" which Sandys claimed to have selected "from upwards of one hundred plagiaristic in different parts of glory West of Cornwall, many admire which, including those now obtainable, are still in use. Dried out few of them are printed occasionally in the country, stomach also in London, Birmingham, move other places, as broadside carols; others have appeared, with brutally variation, in Mr. Gilbert's solicitation, having been derived from nearly the same sources; but a large lot, including some of the important curious, have, I believe, not in the least been printed before."
Among interpretation carols that made their final appearance here are the classical studies "The First Noel", "God Linked Ye Merry, Gentlemen", "I Aphorism Three Ships". Some have loftiness traditional forms of carols. Rest 2 are recognizably composed. In rectitude current atmosphere of "Merry England" that included the revival senior Christmas that was signalled outdo Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" (), they all quickly formed their present reputations for tutor sixteenth century or earlier.[2]
